Video 3 will be about fixing the network adapter I screwed up at the end of part 2. A quick detour.

Scenes plan

Rough order of the video goes here:

Mention failure:

  • I shouldn't have just touched random joints
  • I shouldn't have used too big an iron
  • I shouldn't have used solder braid

Desoldering attempt 1:

  • Document I spent 40 minutes badly heating the chip
  • No plastic melted though
  • Show clean up and flux residue

Pin inspection:

  • Unbend pins
  • Inspect which are still connected
  • Compare to data sheet
  • Conclude we need to desolder

Desoldering attempt 2:

  • Larger nozzle
  • Higher temperature
  • Hard to see when unleaded solder melts
  • Clip of me removing an STM32 chip
  • Footage missing
  • Show desoldered network chip
  • Show cleanup of board
  • Show cleanup of chip and desoldered resistor

Inspection:

  • No lifted pads outside existing ones
  • The pads were never connected?!
  • I should have checked it with a meter!
  • TODO: check pins

Pad replacement:

  • TODO: Add back pads that we need to connect

Re-solder:

  • TODO: Remove old solder
  • TODO: Solder back the resistor
  • TODO: solder the chip in place

Testing:

  • TODO: Install Debian Linux and try the Ethernet port
